The Impact of Vancouver's SkyTrain on Urban Development

This project examines how the development of Vancouver’s SkyTrain system has shaped urban growth and transformation in the surrounding neighborhoods. The analysis focuses on the role of transit-oriented development (TOD) along SkyTrain corridors and how improved transit accessibility has encouraged higher-density development and increased land values near stations. While the expansion of rapid transit has enhanced mobility, improved accessibility, and contributed to reductions in carbon emissions by encouraging public transportation use, it has also accelerated processes of gentrification. Rising property values and redevelopment pressures have led to the displacement of lower-income residents and the loss of affordable housing in several areas. Through this examination, the project highlights the complex relationship between transit infrastructure, urban densification, and social equity, illustrating both the environmental benefits and the socio-economic challenges associated with large-scale transit development.
